We're frequently asked to explain the differences between Perspex, acrylic, polycarbonate and other sheet plastics. Explore below or feel welcome to contact our friendly team to find out more.

What is clear acrylic?

Clear acrylic sheet is a transparent thermoplastic material that comes in a wide range of thicknesses. Its chemical name is Polymethyl Methacrylate or PMMA. It is commonly used as a safe, cost-effective, lightweight and durable substitute for glass.

Acrylic is highly regarded in plastics applications for its:

  • Outstanding resistance

  • Versatility

  • Strength

  • Optical clarity

  • Weatherability

  • Lightweight properties

What is Perspex and how does it differ from acrylic?

Perspex is a trademarked brand of acrylic. You may also be familiar with several other acrylic or PMMA brand names, including Plexiglass, Acrylite and Lucite.

A key part of our expertise is to help you choose the right material for your project. Polycarbonate, HDPE, PVC, seaboard, and Celuka are just a few of the other materials we can usually cut for you on the spot.

Performance properties of Perspex and acrylic sheets

Acrylic remains a superior and popular choice for an array of fabrication projects because of the following qualities:

Low maintenance

Perspex is a durable material that can withstand exposure to ultraviolet and fluorescent light without darkening or deteriorating. It is easy to clean with soap and water.

Moldable and machinable

Perspex and acrylic sheets are flexible and easily manipulated. From laser-cutting, etching, engraving, thermoforming, molding and CNC-router-cutting, there isn’t much you can’t do with acrylic!

Weather and chemical resistant

Acrylic is renowned for its durability, UV resistance and weatherability in a wide range of conditions. From boating and marine panels, to outdoor signage and pool fencing, Perspex is an ideal option for an array of outdoor applications.

Lightweight yet strong

Perspex acrylic warrants itself as an ideal alternative to glass as it is both lighter and more  impact-proof. This makes it a great choice for marine windows, underwater pool windows, windshields and more.

Optical quality and light transmission

With excellent visibility and UV resistance, clear acrylic rivals glass in its clarity and is an ideal material for lightboxes, displays, signs and windows.

Acrylic not only comes in a wide range of colours, finishes, sizes and thicknesses - it also is a popular choice for an array of commercial and domestic applications.

Applications for Perspex cut to size

Where will you find examples of Perspex cut to size near me? At EXP! We are your Gold Coast plastic experts for bringing your ideas and projects to life.

There is no end to the uses for Perspex, Plexiglass, Acrylite, Lucite polycarbonate and other acrylic sheet material.  Acrylic is suitable for a range of products and fabrication projects including:

Perspex marine windows

The Gold Coast is renowned for boating on the Broadwater, local rivers and ocean. But salt air and seawater can degrade boat components over time.

Does your boat need a windshield replacement? Tinted or clear Perspex is the answer. Perspex is UV resistant and can easily withstand harsh weather conditions, making it perfect for all types of marine vehicles.

Perspex is also lightweight and flexible, so it won’t shatter if hit, yet it offers excellent visibility, akin to glass without the weight or fragility.

Frequently asked questions about Perspex and acrylic sheets

Where can I get Perspex cut to size?

Looking for 'acrylic cut to size near me?' EXP Plastics can supply Perspex acrylic cut to size on the Gold Coast at our convenient Arundel location. In many cases, we can cut Perspex for you on the spot or, for an additional fee, we can deliver. Don’t hesitate to drop in to talk with our friendly team or contact us by phone or email to check the availability of our Perspex and acrylic range of products.

What is the difference between Perspex, Plexiglass, polycarbonate and acrylic?

Acrylic: Perspex and Plexiglass are trademarked brands of acrylic. The names may differ, but the chemical composition is the same: Polymethyl Methacrylate or known in the industry as PMMA. There are also several other brand names commonly used to refer to acrylic, including Acrylite and Lucite. All are synthetic glass substitutes. Polycarbonate:Like acrylic, polycarbonate is a light, strong glass substitute, but it's chemical composition makes it even stronger than acrylic at around 250 times the impact resistance of standard glass. This makes it an excellent choice for roofing, greenhouse windows and other applications where strength is the priority. Pros and cons: Acrylic is generally cheaper and provides lots of fabrication options. It can also be polished to restore to shine if scratched. On the downside, it is more likely than polycarbonate to chip or crack upon impact. The pros of polycarbonate include strength, shapeability, and lighter in weight. The cons include that it may scratch and dent more easily and cannot be polished. We would be pleased to help you choose the right material for your application. Visit our Arundel factory to talk with our team or telephone or email about your project needs.

What is the best way to cut Perspex?

Our plastics experts will determine the right method for your project. The best way to cut Perspex depends on the thickness and size of the material. Acrylic can be cut to size using a saw, smaller jobs can be laser-cut and CNC-machining can also be utilised in many cases. Each cutting method produces a different finish. We can also, for example, polish edges and taper off corners, as well as etch or drill holes to suit your needs. If you plan to cut acrylic sheet at home, we recommend using a sharp tool with fine teeth (such as a panel saw, jigsaw or bandsaw). If you will be drilling holes into Perspex acrylic, we recommend using a drill press with a blunt tip drill bit on a flat surface. Make sure you use minimal pressure to avoid cracking or chipping. (Better still, get us to do it for you!) Don’t hesistate to visit our Gold Coast factory at Arundel to view our samples or to discuss your project.

What size and thickness do Perspex sheets come in?

We commonly stock Perspex sheets in two sizes:1225 x 2445 mm and 3000 x 2000mm, which can be cut to your desired size. Perspex acrylic comes in many different sizes and thicknesses, ranging from 1 mm to 50 mm. The most common sizes are 2 mm, 3 mm, 4.5 mm, 6 mm, 8 mm, 10 mm and 12mm. Thicker acrylic in 30 mm, 40 mm and 50 mm may also be available. We work with a variety of plastics suppliers and would be pleased to help source materials for you.

Does Perspex scratch easily?

While Perspex acrylic can be somewhat susceptible to scratching (depending on the application), it is renowned for durability and scratch resistance provided it is transported with care and not exposed to abrasive materials. In many cases, light scratches can be polished out using wet super-fine grit sandpaper or polishing paste.

How much does Perspex cost?

Perspex is a great value and cost-effective option for your plastic fabrication projects. Sheet prices are dependent on the size, thickness, material and any extra fabrication details. We have a wide range of Perspex and acrylic plastic sheets for you to choose from and, because we order in bulk, we pass the discounts on to you.
