We're frequently asked to explain the differences between Perspex, acrylic, polycarbonate and other sheet plastics. Explore below or feel welcome to contact our friendly team to find out more.

What is clear acrylic?

Clear acrylic sheet is a transparent thermoplastic material that comes in a wide range of thicknesses. Its chemical name is Polymethyl Methacrylate or PMMA. It is commonly used as a safe, cost-effective, lightweight and durable substitute for glass.

Acrylic is highly regarded in plastics applications for its:

  • Outstanding resistance

  • Versatility

  • Strength

  • Optical clarity

  • Weatherability

  • Lightweight properties

What is Perspex and how does it differ from acrylic?

Perspex is a trademarked brand of acrylic. You may also be familiar with several other acrylic or PMMA brand names, including Plexiglass, Acrylite and Lucite.

A key part of our expertise is to help you choose the right material for your project. Polycarbonate, HDPE, PVC, seaboard, and Celuka are just a few of the other materials we can usually cut for you on the spot.

Performance properties of Perspex and acrylic sheets

Acrylic remains a superior and popular choice for an array of fabrication projects because of the following qualities:

Low maintenance

Perspex is a durable material that can withstand exposure to ultraviolet and fluorescent light without darkening or deteriorating. It is easy to clean with soap and water.

Moldable and machinable

Perspex and acrylic sheets are flexible and easily manipulated. From laser-cutting, etching, engraving, thermoforming, molding and CNC-router-cutting, there isn’t much you can’t do with acrylic!

Weather and chemical resistant

Acrylic is renowned for its durability, UV resistance and weatherability in a wide range of conditions. From boating and marine panels, to outdoor signage and pool fencing, Perspex is an ideal option for an array of outdoor applications.

Lightweight yet strong

Perspex acrylic warrants itself as an ideal alternative to glass as it is both lighter and more  impact-proof. This makes it a great choice for marine windows, underwater pool windows, windshields and more.

Optical quality and light transmission

With excellent visibility and UV resistance, clear acrylic rivals glass in its clarity and is an ideal material for lightboxes, displays, signs and windows.

Versatility

Acrylic not only comes in a wide range of colours, finishes, sizes and thicknesses - it also is a popular choice for an array of commercial and domestic applications.

There is no end to the uses for Perspex, Plexiglass, Acrylite, Lucite polycarbonate and other acrylic sheet material.  Acrylic is suitable for a range of products and fabrication projects including:

Perspex marine windows

The Gold Coast is renowned for boating on the Broadwater, local rivers and ocean. But salt air and seawater can degrade boat components over time.

Does your boat need a windshield replacement? Tinted or clear Perspex is the answer. Perspex is UV resistant and can easily withstand harsh weather conditions, making it perfect for all types of marine vehicles.

Perspex is also lightweight and flexible, so it won’t shatter if hit, yet it offers excellent visibility, akin to glass without the weight or fragility.
