Acrylonitrile Butadience Styrene
Description
Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) is an ideal material wherever excellent surface quality, colourfastness and lustre are required. ABS is a two phase polymer blend. A continuous phase of styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer (SAN) gives the materials rigidity, hardness and heat resistance.
ABS is hard for a thermoplastic and therefore is reasonably tough, i.e. it maintains impact resistance to low temperatures. It is easily processed, easily bonded (may be electroplated) and can have a superior gloss surface finish. Unfortunately though, ABS has poor solvent and fatigue resistance. It also has poor UV resistance unless protected, and has poor bearing properties (high friction and wear).
Applications
Cabinets and cases, particularly for domestic and industrial instruments, e.g. TV cabinets, food mixers, telephone sets, vacuum cleaners. Vacuum forming for baths, shower trays etc. Extruded into pipe. Used in preference to PVC for high (50°-70°C/120° - 160°F) or low (less than –20°C/-4°F) temperatures. Mouldings may be electroplated for bathroom or automotive applications.
