Acrylic and Perspex

POLYMETHOL METHACRYLATE (PMMA)

Acrylic is a plastic material renowned for its strength, stiffness and optical clarity. It comes in a range of vibrant colours and finishes, from 'Perspex' with glass-like transparency, to specialty acrylic sheets that sparkle or glow in the dark!

What is acrylic?

Acrylic is one of the most commonly used plastics in plastic fabrication. It was first developed in the 1930s to be used as a lightweight, strong, shatter-proof glass substitute.

The chemical name for acrylic is polymethyl methacrylate or (PMMA) and it has many technical advantages over other polymers. Some of these advantages include UV resistance, great weathering properties, excellent light transmission and virtually limitless colour options.

As well as coming in sheets of various thicknesses, acrylic is available in rods and tubes, and is known by a number of different brand names, including:

  • Perspex®

  • Plexiglas®

  • Acrylite®

  • Lucite®
